Have you ever had those moments that you feel that the world is throwing you lemons? That no matter what you try to do, you just cannot get up off the couch? Yea, me too. I was there for far too long. I kept thinking how the heck could I start anything if all I had where rotten lemons or rather excuses!
Lemons are a funny little fruit. They are super tart until that moment that they are ready to pick. Once they are fully ripe, they have a perfect balance of sweet, tangy, tart goodness that is perfect for lemonade, lemon meringue, and other yummy treats. That’s how I see life as well.
We are all just waiting to be in bloom.
The moment will come but if we wait too long, that once ripened fruit can wither and die. It may be tricky to figure out when that moment is. Looking around, I see all my friends getting married, having babies, buying homes, starting businesses, and having other signs of success. I’ve been witness to these major life changes around me since I was 18, yet I felt like I was standing still.
I wasn’t standing still but being ripened on the tree
To make anything grow, time, healthy soil, air, water, sunlight, and the right moment is essential to creating the perfect fruit. Sometimes we wait in anticipation to pick that fruit and bite into it with all our hopes for a perfect fruit. I know that moment of waiting can be so difficult that I’ve wanted to take my first bite only to find it is sour.
I will stop with all the analogies to get to my point today. The moments I’ve prayed and cried and hoped for change were the times I needed to find a way to grow. It was my journey to seeking these fruits of wisdom out that I began to bloom.
The first thing that I did was seek a group of people I could talk to who were going in the same direction I was. There is a great quote from Zig Ziglar “Surround yourself with people who make you a better person”. He continues to say that we resemble those we surround ourselves with. If we surround ourselves with rotten fruit that complain all the time and blame everyone else for their failure, guess what we become? Rotten!
If we surround ourselves with those who want to succeed and to help other succeed, we will have no choice but to grow!
It took a lot of searching to find such a group and sometimes I would find one group to help me until things changed in the dynamics and I would go searching again to continue my journey. I found a group of business minds who serve in faith, I have a church community, and a community of artists.
Finding the positive aspects in each group helps me every day. People are people and we all need to work on the weeds in our life so don’t be afraid to prune back the stray branches that do not serve us well.
I needed the right fertilizer
Healthy food, exercise, and reading the right books are powerful. The changes take time to find what works best, but it is worth it. I knew I didn’t start to poison my roots overnight. It would take time for me to cleanse the soil and replace it with what I needed.
Some great books that have inspired me are:
Dave Ramsey Total Money Makeover
Dan Miller 48 Days to the Work You Love
Dolly Parton Dream More
Tony Robbins Money: Master the Game
Dale Carnegie How to Win Friends and Influence People
There are many more but these will help you to start.
These are more business oriented, but that is what I love, business. Not just selling things, but helping people feel beautiful. I am an artist. This is my vocation. It has taken me a long time to be secure enough to stand up to those who tell me all the reasons why being an artist is not a career. It is and it is mine. Business is a part of being an artist that few people realize. In business, you are offering a service or product. People want to buy your product because of an emotion or need. There are tons of techniques on how to target your business to certain markets, how to serve your customers, and how to make your money grow. Read about them.
I speak volumes on healthy food and exercise and will expand more on this in my next blog.
Once you begin to feed your mind, body, and spirit with all that you need to grow, then the fruit upon your branches will begin to ripen. You will know exactly when to pick these fruits to create your path in this world.
Side note: The struggles are all port of the process. In this hardship, I have found ways to heal and to do something that is better for me. Without this, I would not know how to improve.
If you truly want to move from your couch, then I have given you a few ways to start. The local library will have a few of these books. The rest can be found on Amazon. Let us take these lemons and make lemon cake!
