Break the excuses and find your inner diva
After years of singing, I lost my voice. I’m honestly not sure how it happened, but one day I tried to sing and all I could do was squeak. I tried and I tried and I tried but nothing came out. It was gone, taken away. Or was it?
Many of us whether through life trials, health issues, or accident can lose the gifts we are given. Even those we have yet to unlock can be stolen away in the middle of the night. We listen to all of the negative voices of why we cannot do or be something. The opinions of those we respect haunt our thoughts when we start to dream.
TELL THEM TO SHUT UP!
Our minds are so powerful that we can convince ourselves we are failures or we are successes. Be the successor! Maybe that which makes us look conceited or self-righteous is what makes us confident. What looks like a snob to one person, may be years of confidence building and training to love ourselves.
I often admire those who have such self-confidence to go on stage each night and sing their hearts out to a crowd of thousands. I would watch video after video wanting to be just like they are. I would study their movements, their attitudes, their attributes. The media often sensationalizes their lives to put them on a pedestal.
What do they have that I don’t?
Training. They have often gone through years of training and have people in their lives to encourage their gifts. Their lives are nowhere near perfect, but they have focus on their dreams. Listening to many of those top singers’ stories, they will note a moment or a person who encouraged them when everything seemed lost. They took chances and did the best they could.
As I grew older, I would see these artists less as Rock gods and more for people who have had to overcome some pretty huge mountains. They often work very hard to support not only themselves and their families but those in their crew who make the performance possible. For every famous singer we see, there are hundreds behind the scenes we do not.
If you don’t have anyone to support you, let me be the first
For me, I searched for that one person to talk to about my hopes and my dreams, who would encourage me to greater heights. Often times I would find someone for a few moments of encouragement only to discover they are human. We all have our trials for sure so I took what I could get to keep moving forward. I knew that for many folks in my life, I was possibly the only person they knew with an encouraging word.
Many people have said that I should be a life coach. That is not the career I wanted, I am and always will be an artist. However, I know the power of encouragement. That one word can sometimes be what a person needs to hear to save their life.
Turn your eyes to God
The Holy Bible speaks volumes of encouragement. Many times I’ve turned to the Good Word to help me through some of the darkest of moments. Times that I have gone through that no one should ever know. It is a blessing to read I’m not the first to have these problems and that there is hope with faith. God gives us strength for tomorrow and is with us through the dark nights.
I remember a night being in darkness and feeling so alone. Why was I going through this? Why can’t I get to where I want to? It takes time, effort, and absolute focus, but little by little I came through this dark night.
I finally got my voice back
It started with a song and continued with training. I sing each and every day as much as I possibly can. I’ve studied with a couple very talented teachers. The key to my success is to see my achievements each and every day. Some days it is hitting that high A (yep you know it!) and other days it is teaching myself to breathe properly. Some days it is talking to a future artist about their dreams.
I’ve found that the closer I get to my dreams, the more opposition I find. The object is to not get distracted. You are fabulous, you have a dream, and with the right training, your dream can soar! At times it will feel like there are wolves at your back or your feet are stuck in cement. Take that time to train, read, and breathe. Nothing is wasted if you can stay positive and know there are others out there who truly want to see you succeed.
